96 Points Wine Spectator Magazine
"This is still very tight, but the tannins that lead the way now are sleek and refined, and should easily meld into the huge core of roasted chestnut, black currant paste, warm fig and tar. Has a long, coffee -and loam- tinged finÃs. Best from 2009 through 2019."
94 Points Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate
"The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon is opaque purple-colored with aromas of pain grille, pencil lead, scorched earth, black currant, and blackberry liqueur. This is followed by an opulent, very intense, complex Cabernet with gobs of savory fruit, exceptional depth, and enough structure to evolve for 6-8 years. This lengthy, classy effort will be at its best from 2015 to 2035."
Chile's First Ultra-Premium Wine
Don Melchor was the first Ultra-Premium wine in the history of Chilean oenology, and is the only one with a track record of 19 vintages, all of them recipients of international awards and commending reviews. The first -1987- vintage was released to the market in 1989. Don Melchor debuted as the first Chilean world-class wine and it contributed to position Chile as a producer of quality wine.
ORIGIN Puente Alto Vineyard is located in the highest, coldest region of the Maipo Valley. Don Melchor is harvested from 114 Cabernet Sauvignon hectares within this larger vineyard. In this section, vines are 20 years old on average and yield fruit of extraordinary quality. Don Melchor is a blend-wine, made with selected grapes harvested from carefully drawn plots.
SOIL Alluvial origin, stony, poor in nutrients and, due to its elevated gravel content, highly permeable. This soil fosters plants of scarce vigor and concentrated, ripe bunches.
CLIMATE Semi-arid Mediterranean. This region is set at the very foothill of the Andes and near the Maipo River, where day-to-night temperature variation is steeper. Colder nights are a contributing agent to a more leisurely ripening process, which in turn acts to preserve the elegant aromas and flavors.
