We'd love to see you there! August 13th 2008 Article on Chilean Wines in NZ Herald Viva mag
Jo Byrzynska, the wine reviewer for the Herald wrote a great article titled "Chilean Conquistadores - A new wave of South American wines invading our shores". Apart from giving smoe background on the Chilean wine industry and the history of Carmenere she also reviewed two of our wines:
Devilishly Good Casillero del Diablo Carmenere 2006
With its voluptuous blackcurrant fruit, ripe tannins, notes of freshly ground cofee, spice and the green peppercorn/herbal notes that characterise the variety, this seductive example from Chile's largest winery, Concha y toro, shows carmenere in all its rich and velvety-textured glory.
The Secret's Out Viu Manent Secreto Casablanca Sauvignon Blanc 2006
New Zealand needs to watch out with impressively vibrant and fresh sauvignons like this one coming out of Chile. Kiwi vintner Grand Phelps has crafted an example with ripe fleshy papaya and guava infused with dried herbs and lifted by zesty citrus and an elegant minerality. December 11th 2007 Concha y Toro in NZ
Since August 2007 we have been agents of Concha y Toro for NZ. Concha y Toro have been described as "one of the extremely small clutch of wine brands that enjoys both critical and commercial success" according to Decanter Magazine (UK).
They are the biggest winery in Chile - producing three times as much as the number two winery (Cono Sur) who they also own!
What is amazing about this huge winery is that all of their efforts go into producing quality. This is very hard to achieve on a large scale but Concha y Toro have been doing it consistently for years now. In fact their top wine - Don Melchor - was named the fourth best wine in the world by Wine Spectator magazine in both 2005 and 2006 - for different vintages! That is an amazing feat considering the magazine tastes over 12,000 wines per annum.
We have decided to start with the Casillero del Diablo range - which provides fantastic value for money. Two of its most important accolades received recently were "Best Value Cabernet Sauvignon in the World" for their Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, and the Trophy for "Best Red Blend under 10 Pounds" at the 2006 Decanter World Wine Awards for the Merlot 2005.
We look forward to you enjoying great value for your money with the Casillero del Diablo range. July 13th 2007 Here comes the Auckland Foodshow!
We'll be at the Auckland Foodshow again this year. This extravaganza of Food, Cooking and Wine attracts around 35,000 visitors over the 4 days and there are over 200 exhibitors.
It runs from the 2nd to the 5th of August at the ASB Showgrounds in Greenlane (next to Alexandra Park). If you're planning on going (we suggest you do!), try to go on Thursday or Friday - the weekend tends to be overcrowded. If you have no choice but to go on the weekend the best times are either early (10am) or late (after 3pm).
The wine we will have for tasting are the ever popular Cono Sur Gewurz and Viognier (both 06); our NEW brand Casillero del Diablo (The Devil's Cellar) Merlot, Cab Sav & Carmenere; Misiones Cuvee Carmenere 03 (our top Carmenere) and Tamaya's great Late Harvest muscat 03.
We will be located in Hall 1 at stand B10. See you there! November 20th 2006 Cono Sur makes the Best Sav. Blanc in the World
Shock! The Trophy for Best Sauvignon Blanc Over £10 in the Decanter World Wine Awards isn’t from NZ. It’s from Chile—Cono Sur’s 20 Barrels Sauvignon Blanc 2005. And we have some in stock!
There were more than 6,300 wines entered, representative of the best the world has to offer. That’s quite a result. Beating the best of New Zealand to this Award. 2005 was the first vintage this wine was produced, so the head winemaker at Cono Sur was thoroughly chuffed.
More a Sancerre style than Marlborough, it has excellent acidity and structure and a beautiful long, elegant finish. From the Casablanca Valley, the site is only a couple of kilometers from the sea, and directly faces it. It is characterized by it’s cooler than normal weather, prevalent salinity and rich, clay soils. These attributes nourish the wines crisp, intense, aromatically persistent character. The resulting Sauvignon Blanc is generous and affable, refreshing and juicy, complex and long.
Be quick to secure yourself some! August 11th 2006 Cuisine Article on Chile The July Issue of Cuisine has a four page article titled "The Chilean Revolution", written by Michael Cooper. It covers three of the wineries we represent (Cono Sur, Chocalan & von Siebenthal), and heaps praise on the quality of the wines coming out of Chile - especially the aromatics and Pinot Noirs. July 25th 2006 Sold out - Cono Sur Viognier 2005!
Sorry! We have just sold out of Cono Sur Viognier 2005. The 2006 vintage will be arriving at the end of August, together with their very good varietal Pinot Noir (called the best in the world under 5 pounds). July 14th 2006 Auckland Foodshow Here we Come!
We will be at the Auckland Foodshow from the 3rd to the 6th of August at stand 135 in Hall One.
We will hav an impressive range of wines including NZ's most highly rewarded Carmenere and Cono Sur's Riesling 05 (new for us).
We look forward to seeing you there! April 3rd 2006 Bob Campbell Loves Carmenere
Home & Entertaining Magazine, led by Wine Editor, Bob Campbell, recommended two Misiones de Rengo Wines in their April/May issue.
Misiones de Rengo Reserva Carmenere 2004 got 87 points from the panel and was described as "similar to Merlot, but spicier and classier than most".
Misiones de Rengo Carmenere 2004 got 86 points and was described as an approachable easy-drinking red.
February 8th 2006 Cono Sur Gewurztraminer - Fantastic!
Cono Sur has done it again!
In the january issue of Cuisine our Cono Sur Gewurztraminer ($14.95) received 4 1/2 stars. Michael Cooper said it was "A great buy from Chile. Youthful and fresh, it's an intensely varietal wine with a soaring, exotically perfumed bouquet, mouthfilling body and rich, dryish, citrusy flavours".
Cloudy Bay's Gewurz. ($28.95) received 4 stars in the same issue. Just show's you don't have to pay the world to get the best...
We currently have this wine on special (click on the drop down menu to see the case price). October 17th 2005 Cuisine Best Buy White & Red
Cono Sur Viognier 2005 was chosen by Cuisine Magazine as the Best Buy Imported White in their current issue. They said it is "as good as Viogniers at twice the price ... an extraordinary bargain".
Cuisine also chose our Misiones Reserva Carmenere 2004 as the Best Buy Imported Red in the same issue.
You can buy both wines direct form us on this site. July 5th 2005 Misiones Stars Again
Misiones de Rengo has received critical acclaim in two important wine competitions.
At the Japan Wine Challenge Misiones de Rengo's Cuvée Chardonnay 2004 won the trophy for "Best New World White Wine".
At Citadelles du Vin, the competition at VinExpo Bordeaux, Misiones de Rengo was the most awarded Chilean winery with three Gold, two Silver and three Bronze medals.
Misiones' Carmenère 2004 and Reserve Carmenère 2004 both won gold medals at this important competition. They will be available in NZ from mid august.

May 20th 2005 Foodshow an Overwhelming Success
The Wellington Foodshow (May 13-15 at Westpac Trust Stadium) was an overwhelming success for us at Gold Medal Wines.
We were quietly delighted by the enthusiasm shown by the public for our wines. Many commented that we were the only wine stand offering something "different" and many were swooned by the voluptuosness of Carmenere or the moreishness of the Tamaya Late Harvest.
If you came to visit us at the show, a big Thank You, and if you haven't yet tasted our Carmenere, you can look forward to trying some at the Foodshow in Auckland (4-7 August).
Hasta luego... April 29th 2005 Cuvee Carmenere strikes Gold again!
Misiones' Cuvee Carmenere struck Gold again, this time at Vinalies Internationales 2005, run by the French Winemakers Society.
Yet another success for Misiones Carmenere. April 20th 2005 Cuvee Carmenere Great Gold
Misiones de Rengo's Cuvee Carmenere 2003 has been awarded a Great Gold Medal (one above Gold) at the Brussels Wine Expo 2005.
Another string in the bow of Misiones powerful Carmenere range. |
